2019 update

Updated: Oct 23, 2024

It’s only April but we already know that 2019 is going to be a huge year for us!

So far, we’ve delivered a number of programmes, including Taste sessions with Cuiken Primary and Lambhill Stables at Eden Rock Edinburgh, and eight-week Climb sessions with Choices Programme and CWIN Youth Club at TCA Glasgow.

At the end of last year, we celebrated our brilliant team of volunteers at an event at Eden Rock, which resulted in a lot of great ideas to add to our jam-packed action plan. As always, we couldn’t do it without you, so thank you for your support!

So what have we been up to?

CHRC Winter Talk Series

Every month, Carnethy Hill Running Club hosts an inspiring night of adventure talks. In January, we were lucky enough to have our Ambassadors, Robbie Phillips and Niall McNair, complete with matching shirts (!), invited along to talk about their epic climbing adventures and the work going on at Urban Uprising. Thanks for having us and for your generous donations from the night which raised enough funding for four young people to take part in a six-week Climb programme.

Self-delivering a new syllabus

In February, we held our very first self-delivered Taste session! Our volunteer Chris led a brilliant group from Sandy’s Community Centre who had a great time at Eden Rock Edinburgh. We’ve been working hard to create a syllabus that can be run solely by volunteers and which will allow us to offer more flexibility with our sessions. This was a huge step forward towards bringing our Uprisings to new walls and cities, so watch this space!

BMC Climbing Fundraiser

The British Mountaineering Council (BMC) ran a fundraising campaign in March that involved teams from schools, universities and clubs taking part in climbing challenges to raise money for a choice of charities. A huge thank you to all involved, especially our brilliant Youth Ambassadors, Hannah and Daniel Smith, who pulled an average weight of a family of rhinos every day! This was a fantastic event to be involved with and donations raised from the fundraiser will allow 26 young people to take part in a Taste session. Thank you, BMC!

Masquerade climbing at Edinburgh University

The Edinburgh University Mountaineering Club continues to be a huge supporter of ours and we had a great time at their recent Masquerade and You Are What You Eat climbing competitions. The comps were open to climbers of all levels who embraced the themes with fox masks, giant hats and foody get-ups! Thanks for your continued support and for the opportunity to tell those taking part more about what we’ve been getting up to.

Humans of Climbing

Our Founder, Stu Green, was featured in Volume 2 of UKClimbing’s inspiring ‘Humans of Climbing’ series. Check it out here!

Ready to rough it?

On Sunday 18 August, we need a squad of supporters to take on the Rough Runner 10K obstacle course in Edinburgh to raise funds for Urban Uprising. Anyone can take part and there’s no pressure to finish the event in a set time. Think inflatables, water slides, fancy dress and a LOT of fun.

Spotlight on…Ben Campbell

At the end of last year, Ben Campbell joined the team as our Project Coordinator. After only six months in the role, he’s already helped us to supercharge Urban Uprising as we push on with the next exciting stages of our journey.

On his new role, Ben said: “It’s been so inspiring to see the fantastic work going on within the charity and the passion our community has for what we do. I’ve been working hard to build and maintain relationships with young organisations and to increase our team of volunteers, as we expand our reach throughout the UK. Coming up with great fundraising ideas is also a huge part of my role, but for me, the best part is hearing feedback from young people about how impactful the sessions are; that’s really what it’s all about.”

Without your donations, none of this would be possible.

If you’d like to help us reach out to more young people, please donate through our Facebook Page, Website or email us for more information on how you can donate or get involved.

Thanks for your support!

Ben, Stu, Sarah, Julia, Rob & Tom
